Copyright Resources for Huntington University: Library Reserve Items

The following Guide presents and explains the Copyright Law of the United States. It is important ethically and legally that the University observe and adhere to these copyright laws.

Library Reserve Policy

Faculty members may request that library owned or personal copies of items for class use be placed on Reserve. To place an item on reserve please fill out the Reserve Form completely and submit the form and the item to the Access Services Assistant or Director at least 1 business day before the item will be needed by the class. If you request the library staff to pull the item(s) please allow 2 business days. Forms and items should be submitted to the Access Services Assistant or Director between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Do not leave reserve materials with student desk attendants.

  • Loan Periods Available:   3 hours, 1 day, and 2 day
  • Hourly loan periods are assumed to be IN LIBRARY USE ONLY
  • Each faculty member is limited to four reserve shelves of material
  • Materials placed on reserves are for class assignments, not for student convenience or an "easy access library"
  • Download a copy of the Course Reserve Form
  • Please give the same bibliographic information to students as you record on the Reserve Form
  • The following items will not be accepted for Course Reserves:
    • Interlibrary Loan Items
    • Rented media such as Netflix DVDs

Copyright Policies related to Library Reserves

As stated above the RichLyn Library will NOT accept Interlibrary Loan Items (or photocopies thereof) for course reserves. Nor will we accept rented media. In addition:

  • Photocopies of articles or book chapters may be placed on reserve for one semester without permission from the copyright holder. If you wish to use the material beyond the one semester the library needs to have a copy of your permission slip from the copyright holder.
  • No more than one chapter or 10% of a book may be photocopied for reserves.
  • Professors may request copyright permission for articles needed longer than one term by using the "Permission Request Form" template found on this guide. The library does not assume responsibility for any fees associated with obtaining copyright clearance.
  • The librarians can assist professors by creating a stable link to full text articles that are found in the full text databases to which we subscribe.
