Interlibrary Loan

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan, commonly referred to by the acronym ILL, is an aid to your research process. ILL helps you obtain books, periodical articles, and other media that are not available at the RichLyn Library. Through state, regional, and national sources we have access to millions of items from other libraries. Some materials such as rare material, reference books, textbooks, e-books and computer software are not available for loan. Music and video recordings may be made by special request only and may not be available for loan.

Who can make an Interlibrary Loan Request?

ILL is available to Huntington University students, faculty and staff. Community patrons and Alumni may also have certain ILL privileges. See the Community Patrons tab and Alumni tab for further details.

What does Interlibrary Loan cost?

RichLyn Library does not charge for the request itself however we do pass on any charges from the lending library. Most requests coming from PALNI and other Indiana libraries are free but in other cases the charges can range from $1.00 to $50.00. We allow you to specify the maximum amount that you are willing to pay on the ILL form. If no specification is made the full amount of the charge will be passed on to you. If we find out that the library charges above the amount specified we will attempt to contact you about your willingness to pay. If we cannot contact you the request will be canceled. You must pay any charges before the material is turned over to you, even if they are received beyond the date needed. If you fail to pay any charges your ILL privileges will be suspended and your college account will be charged.

How long will it take?

Articles normally arrive within 24 to 48 hours when transmitted electronically. All other material coming from Indiana libraries may be available within a week but we always request you allow a minimum of two weeks before inquiring about a request. Material received from out-of-state may take longer. If you need a rush item please contact Interlibrary Loan Services for possible options and charges.

When are the items due?

Most periodical articles are not returned and may be kept by the patron. Other items are usually loaned anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks depending on the policies of the lending library. A note will come with the material as to the due date. Usually one renewal may be requested but it is only granted by permission of the lending library. Renewal request must be made at least 3 days before the item is due to allow time for response from the lending library. Any overdue charges are the responsibility of the patron. Please contact the Interlibrary Loan Services to make a renewal request.

Where can I pick up the items?

You will be notified by Interlibrary Loan Services that your request has arrived. Article will be delivered electronically to you Huntington University email address. Books and other material are available for pickup at RichLyn Library Service Desk. Students at our Fort Wayne and Arizona Campuses should make special arrangements with Interlibrary Loan Services to have the material delivered.
